What is Type Approval?
Type Approval is a mandatory certification required before electronic or communication equipment may be imported, sold, or used in a specific country.
The approval confirms that the product complies with the technical and safety standards set by the relevant regulatory authority.
What does “Type” or “Product Type” mean?
A “Type” refers to a specific product model.
Each individual model — even if it looks similar to another product — is considered a separate type and may require its own approval. Differences in hardware, radio modules, frequencies, or specifications usually mean a separate application is required.
Which products require Type Approval?
Most electronic and communication equipment requires Type Approval, including but not limited to:
🥨 Wireless and radio devices
🥨 Networking equipment
🥨 Audio and video equipment
🥨 ICT and communication devices
If you are unsure whether your product requires approval, we recommend contacting us for confirmation before importing or selling the product.
Which countries do you provide Type Approval services for?
We currently assist with applications for:
South Africa – ICASA
Namibia – CRAN
Botswana – On request
Additional regions may be considered depending on the product and requirements.
What is ICASA?
ICASA (Independent Communications Authority of South Africa) is the regulatory authority responsible for approving electronic and communication equipment in South Africa.
An ICASA Type Approval Certificate is required before products may be legally imported or sold in the country.
What is CRAN?
CRAN (Communications Regulatory Authority of Namibia) is the regulatory authority responsible for approving electronic and communication equipment in Namibia.
Depending on the product, either full Type Approval or an exemption certificate may be required.
How long does the Type Approval process take?
Processing times vary depending on:
📲The regulatory authority involved
📲The completeness and accuracy of the documentation
📲Product complexity
While timelines cannot be guaranteed, delays are most commonly caused by missing or incorrect documentation.
What documentation is required for Type Approval?
The following documents are required for all Type Approval applications:
💡Full CE Report
💡Clear product images
💡Technical specification sheet
The CE report must include the IEC 62368-1 test standard.
What is IEC 62368-1 and why is it required?
IEC 62368-1 is an international safety standard for:
🪬Audio equipment
🪬Video equipment
🪬Information and Communication Technology (ICT) equipment
Regulatory authorities require this test report to ensure that products meet accepted safety requirements.
What is a Temporary Import Certificate?
A Temporary Import Certificate allows products to be imported into Namibia for a limited period, typically for testing, demonstration, or evaluation purposes.
This certificate is often required for customs clearance.
What is an Exemption Certificate?
Some products do not require full Type Approval but still require official confirmation for customs or regulatory purposes.
In these cases, an Exemption Certificate is issued instead of a full Type Approval certificate.
How much does Type Approval cost?
Our service fees are:
💰R2,500 per Type Approval application
💰R1,500 once-off for company registration
Government certificate and license fees are charged separately and vary depending on the authority and product.
Final pricing is confirmed at the time of enquiry.
Prices can be adjusted without prior notification and is reviewed annually.
Why do government certificate fees change?
Government authorities review and adjust certificate and license fees periodically.
For ICASA, fee changes typically occur between March and April each year.
Can you guarantee approval?
Approval decisions are made solely by the relevant regulatory authorities.
While approval cannot be guaranteed, we ensure that applications are submitted correctly and in line with all requirements to minimize the risk of delays or rejection.
Do you handle communication with the authorities?
Yes. We manage the full application process and liaise directly with ICASA, CRAN, and other relevant authorities on behalf of our clients.
